Our Pre-school has been carefully designed to support choice making within the curriculum areas of the EYFS. We believe in a free flow system where children are able to make positive choices in their own play and learning, linking these to their own personal interests indoors and outdoors.

We have a variety of activities allowing time for group work as well as one to one time with their key worker supporting and developing next steps. Each month there is a focused topic/event throughout the nursery. The planning is displayed on the wall for all to see. Parents are welcome to contribute any ideas or resources.

Each child will have their own peg and drawer with their name on to help them develop name recognition and have a sense of belonging. At Hawthorns we encourage early literacy skills. On a regular basis pre-school children and staff enjoy a walk to Skelmanthorpe Library where they have the opportunity to explore exciting books as well as bring them home to read with parents. We also introduce the beginnings of Phonics and support children with letters and sounds. We have found that this supports the children when transitioning to their new school. We have forged close links with all the local schools and as such we enjoy regular outings to watch plays / shows and take part in fun days and play / stay sessions.
