Pre-School (3 – 5 Years)
At Hawthorns Nursery we understand that every child is individual and unique. With this in mind we aim to work in partnership with our parents to provide a safe and secure environment that encourages all children’s development.
Our pre-school has been carefully designed to support choice making within the curriculum areas of the EYFS. We believe in a free flow system where children are able to make positive choices in their own play and learning, linking these to their own personal interests in and outdoors.
We have a variety of activities allowing time for group work as well as one to one time with their key worker supporting and developing next steps. Each month there is a focused topic throughout the nursery. The planning is displayed on the wall for all to see. Parents are welcome to contribute any ideas or resources.
Each child will have their own peg and drawer with their name on to help them develop name recognition and have a sense of belonging. At Hawthorns we encourage early literacy skills. On a weekly basis pre-school children and staff enjoy a walk to Skelmanthorpe Library where they have the opportunity to explore exciting books as well as bring them home to read with parents. We also introduce Jolly Phonics and support children with letters and sounds. We have found that this supports the children when transitioning to their new School. We have forged close links with all the local schools and as such we enjoy regular outings to watch plays / shows and take part in fun days and play / stay sessions.
All children have their own Key person who keeps a careful and accurate record of your child’s development however we believe parents are a vital resource and we actively encourage all ideas and will try and support any individual learning needs. Our setting use an online Tapestry portal so you can access your child’s observations from the comfort of your own home. This is a great way for both staff and parent work together by gathering information to promote and support the child’s next steps.
We are proud to also offer Dance Academy classes and our dance teacher brings enjoyment and learning to dance and music.
At Hawthorns Nursery we praise children by using positive language. We realise that some children respond better to visual aids rather than verbal instructions and we have a range of these to support their communication, development and understanding.
